The Complete Buying Process
We have streamlined the purchasing process so you can go from inquiry to delivery in as few as three business days. Here is every step, explained in detail, so there are no surprises.
Submit Your Requirements
Tell us what size totes you need (275-gallon or 330-gallon), the quantity, and whether you require food-grade, chemical-grade, or general-purpose containers. Mention any special requirements such as specific valve types, cage colors, or pallet materials. You can submit via our online form, email, or phone. We respond within 24 hours with transparent pricing.
Receive Your Custom Quote
Our sales team prepares a detailed, itemized quote based on your specifications. The quote includes per-unit cost by grade, applicable volume discounts, delivery fees (or a note that delivery is free), estimated delivery date, and total cost with no hidden line items. Quotes are valid for 14 days and come with no obligation whatsoever.
Choose Your Grade
Select from Grade A (like-new), Grade B (cosmetic wear, fully functional), Grade C (budget option, structurally sound), or Grade D (project/non-liquid use). We send photos and videos of available inventory on request so you can see exactly what you are getting before you commit. Our team can also recommend the best grade for your specific application.
Review Inventory Photos
Upon request, we photograph actual totes from our inventory that match your order specifications. You receive multiple angles showing the bottle clarity, cage condition, valve type, pallet condition, and any labels or markings. This step is optional but recommended for first-time buyers who want complete visual confirmation before ordering.
Confirm & Pay
Lock in your order with a purchase order, credit card, ACH transfer, or company check. Net-30 terms are available for established accounts that pass a credit review. Once payment or a valid PO is received, your totes are pulled from inventory, given a final quality check, and staged in our loading area for the next available delivery window.
Quality Control Check
Before your totes leave our facility, each one passes a final 15-point quality control inspection. Technicians verify the bottle is clean and crack-free, the valve operates smoothly, the cage is straight and secure, and the pallet is structurally sound. Any tote that does not meet the stated grade is replaced from stock. Inspection certificates are generated for every unit.
Delivery & On-Site Inspection
Our drivers deliver directly to your dock, warehouse, yard, or any accessible location. Totes arrive strapped and secured on our trucks. Upon arrival, you have the opportunity to inspect every tote. If anything does not match the stated grade or your expectations, we replace it on the spot from backup inventory carried on the truck, or arrange a replacement delivery within 48 hours.
Post-Sale Support
Our relationship does not end at delivery. You receive a 90-day leak-free guarantee, access to our support team for any questions about storage, handling, or maintenance, and priority pricing on future orders. We check in 30 days after delivery to make sure everything is performing as expected. Repeat customers automatically receive loyalty pricing adjustments.
Understanding Our Quality Grades
Every IBC tote in our inventory is inspected against a 15-point checklist before being assigned a grade. This system gives you full transparency so you can buy with confidence. Below is a detailed breakdown of each grade, what to expect visually and functionally, and the best applications for each.
Grade A - Like New
These totes have been used once or twice and show minimal signs of wear. The bottle is clear or lightly tinted with no scratches, stains, or UV damage. The cage is straight with no bent bars. The valve is original or replaced with new. The pallet is clean and structurally perfect. Grade A totes are visually indistinguishable from new containers in most cases and represent the top tier of our inventory.
The bottle on a Grade A tote will be crystal clear or have only the very slightest hint of tint from previous contents. There will be no cloudiness, no yellowing from UV exposure, and no visible scratches deeper than surface-level marks that do not affect structural integrity. The interior is spotless after our cleaning process, with no residual odors or staining.
The steel cage on a Grade A tote will be free of rust, dents, and bent bars. Welds will be intact with no signs of fatigue or repair. The galvanized coating will still be substantially present, providing long-term corrosion resistance. The cage will operate smoothly, folding and locking into position without resistance.
- Single or double use history only
- No staining, discoloration, or cloudiness
- Original or brand-new replacement valve
- Clean, undamaged cage with intact galvanizing
- Pallet in excellent condition with no repairs
- Ideal for food-grade, pharmaceutical, and visible storage
- Full certification documentation included
- Best choice for customer-facing or audit-sensitive operations
Grade B - Good Condition
Grade B totes have been used multiple times but remain fully functional. They may have light scratches on the bottle, minor label residue, or slight cage surface rust that does not affect structural integrity. These are our most popular grade because they offer the best balance of price and quality.
The bottle on a Grade B tote may show light cloudiness or slight tinting from previous contents, but will be structurally sound with no cracks, warps, or soft spots. Minor scratches are acceptable, and there may be small areas of label residue that did not fully remove during cleaning. The bottle will be clean and odor-free inside.
The cage may have minor surface rust in spots, typically on weld joints or lower crossbars. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the cage's load-bearing capacity. All bars will be straight or professionally straightened. Welds will be intact. The cage will fold and lock properly.
- Multiple use history, typically 3-8 cycles
- Minor cosmetic wear acceptable on bottle and cage
- Fully pressure tested to manufacturer specifications
- Valve replaced with new factory-spec unit
- Cage straightened and treated for surface rust if present
- Best value for general industrial, agricultural, and non-food use
- Most popular grade among repeat customers
- All food-grade options require additional cleaning certification
Grade C - Budget
Grade C totes are the most affordable option for liquid storage. They show significant cosmetic wear such as heavy staining, label residue, or moderate cage rust, but they are structurally sound and hold liquid without leaks. These are ideal for non-visible storage, rainwater collection, irrigation, or applications where appearance does not matter.
The bottle on a Grade C tote will be notably stained or discolored but free of cracks and structural defects. It may have moderate scratching or areas where pigment from previous contents has permanently tinted the HDPE. The bottle will still hold liquid at rated pressure without any leakage. Interior cleaning removes residues but permanent staining may remain.
The cage may have moderate surface rust, minor dents, or previously repaired welds. It will be structurally sound and able to support a full tote without deformation, but it will show its age. The pallet may have replacement boards or visible wear but will meet minimum load-bearing requirements.
- Heavy cosmetic wear on bottle and/or cage
- Structurally sound and verified leak-free
- May have replaced or repaired components
- Lowest price point available for functional totes
- Ideal for rainwater collection, irrigation, non-food storage
- Great for agricultural, construction, and workshop use
- All totes still pressure-tested before sale
- Popular with hobby farmers, homeowners, and DIY projects
Grade D - Project / As-Is
Grade D totes are sold as-is for non-liquid applications. They may have cracked bottles, damaged cages, or broken pallets. These totes are not suitable for holding liquids but are valuable for dry storage, raised garden beds, composting stations, construction site material bins, and DIY projects where the cage or pallet is the primary component of interest.
The bottle on a Grade D tote may have hairline cracks, stress fractures, or holes. It may be significantly warped or UV degraded. The cage may have broken welds, severely bent bars, or heavy corrosion. The pallet may be cracked or missing boards. These totes are priced for their component or project value rather than their capacity to store liquids.
- Sold as-is with no liquid-storage guarantee
- Not suitable for holding liquids under pressure
- Individual components may still be highly usable
- Lowest price available in our entire inventory
- Ideal for raised beds, dry storage, and creative projects
- Cage-only and pallet-only options available
- Popular with landscapers, artists, and DIY builders
- Bulk lots available for large-scale projects at deep discounts
Transparent Pricing, No Surprises
We believe in straightforward pricing. The quote you receive is the price you pay, with no hidden fees for delivery, loading, or surcharges. Our pricing is based on three factors: the tote grade, the quantity ordered, and the delivery distance.
Used IBC totes typically cost 60-80% less than new. For a standard 275-gallon HDPE tote, that means savings of $150-$300 per unit compared to buying new from a manufacturer. When you multiply that across a fleet of 50 or 100 totes, the savings become substantial.
Every purchase also contributes to the circular economy. By choosing a used tote, you prevent roughly 30 pounds of HDPE plastic from being manufactured and eventually landfilled. It is a win for your bottom line and a win for the environment.

12 Tips for Buying Used IBC Totes
Know your application first
Food-grade storage requires Grade A with FDA-compliant cleaning. Rainwater collection works great with Grade C. Matching the grade to your actual need saves money without sacrificing performance.
Always ask about previous contents
A tote that held food-grade vegetable oil is easier to clean and repurpose than one that held industrial adhesive. Previous contents directly affect cleaning difficulty, residual odor, and suitability for your application.
Buy in volume when possible
Volume discounts start at just 10 units and can save you 5-20% per tote. If you know you will need more totes in the next 6 months, ordering them together saves significantly compared to multiple small orders.
Inspect the valve closely
The valve is the most common failure point on an IBC tote. Ensure it operates smoothly, seals completely when closed, and does not drip. At Ohio IBC Totes, we replace every valve on Grade A and B totes as a standard practice.
Check the bottle for UV damage
HDPE degrades with prolonged sun exposure. Look for yellowing, brittleness, or a chalky surface texture. UV-damaged bottles are more prone to cracking. If totes will be stored outdoors, consider UV-stabilized options.
Examine the cage welds
Broken or repaired welds can indicate structural stress. Look at corner joints and where horizontal bars meet vertical supports. Sound welds should be smooth and consistent. Pitted or cracked welds are a red flag.
Test the pallet for stability
Push on the corners and center of the pallet. It should not flex, crack, or feel spongy. A compromised pallet makes the tote unsafe to move with a forklift and creates a tipping hazard when stacked.
Consider food-grade even for non-food uses
Food-grade totes have been cleaned to a higher standard and are documented. If you are storing potable water, animal feed, or anything that might contact living things, the extra cost of food-grade certification is worth it.
Ask for photos before ordering
Reputable sellers will photograph actual inventory for you. Stock photos mean nothing. We photograph the specific totes that will ship to you, so you see exactly what you are getting before your card is charged.
Factor in total cost of ownership
A Grade B tote at $70 that lasts 5 more years costs you $14/year. A Grade C at $40 that lasts 2 years costs $20/year. Sometimes the mid-range option is actually cheaper over the tote's remaining useful life.
Plan for storage and handling
IBC totes are 48 inches wide and 40 inches deep. Make sure your receiving area, doorways, and storage space can accommodate them. Empty totes can be stacked 3-high for storage but should be moved individually by forklift.
Build a relationship with your supplier
Repeat customers get better pricing, priority access to Grade A inventory, and faster turnaround. We offer loyalty pricing adjustments after three orders and dedicated account management after five. Long-term partnerships save both parties time and money.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying based on price alone
The cheapest tote is not always the best value. A $25 tote with a cracked valve and compromised cage may cost you more in downtime, spills, and replacement than a $75 tote that lasts for years. Always evaluate total cost of ownership.
Ignoring previous contents
A tote that held industrial chemicals should never be used for food or water storage, regardless of how clean it looks. Chemical absorption into HDPE is permanent at the molecular level. Always match the tote's history to your intended use.
Skipping the valve inspection
A leaking valve can cause product loss, slip hazards, and environmental contamination. It is the single most important component to check. Always test the valve by closing it fully and checking for drips over a 5-minute period.
Overestimating stacking capacity
Stacking full IBC totes requires cages rated for the combined weight. Most standard totes can be stacked 2-high when full and 4-high when empty. Exceeding these limits risks cage collapse and catastrophic failure.
Not verifying food-grade certification
Asking for 'food-grade' is not enough. Demand documentation: certificate of cleaning, ATP test results, and FDA-compliant material certificates. If a seller cannot provide these, the tote may not actually meet food-grade standards.
Forgetting about outdoor exposure
HDPE degrades in UV light. Totes stored outdoors without cover will become brittle and crack within 2-3 years. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, use UV-stabilized totes or cover them with opaque tarps.
Buying from unverified sellers
Online marketplaces and classified ads offer no quality guarantees, no return policies, and no inspection standards. You may save a few dollars upfront but risk receiving totes that are unsafe, contaminated, or misrepresented.
Not planning for transportation
A 275-gallon IBC tote weighs about 130 pounds empty and over 2,400 pounds full. You need proper vehicle capacity, strapping equipment, and potentially a forklift for safe handling. Never transport unsecured totes.
Industry-Specific Buying Guides
Different industries have different requirements for IBC totes. Here is what our team recommends based on years of experience serving each sector.
Food & Beverage
Grade A recommended
Food-grade certification is mandatory. Totes must have documented cleaning with FDA-approved sanitizers, ATP testing below food-contact thresholds, and new food-grade valves. Only purchase totes with known, food-safe previous contents (oils, syrups, juices, water). Request the full documentation package including certificate of cleaning and material safety certificates.
Agriculture & Farming
Grade B or C recommended
Farms use totes for water storage, fertilizer mixing, herbicide application, and livestock watering. Grade B offers the best value for most agricultural applications. For animal drinking water, consider food-grade certification. For chemical mixing, ensure the previous contents are compatible. Grade C works well for irrigation and non-consumable water storage.
Chemical Manufacturing
Grade A or B recommended
Chemical compatibility is the primary concern. Verify that the HDPE bottle is compatible with your specific chemical by referencing the manufacturer resistance chart. New valves are essential to prevent cross-contamination. For corrosive chemicals, choose totes with minimal prior use history. Request totes that previously held chemically compatible substances.
Cannabis & Hemp
Grade A recommended
The cannabis industry requires food-grade certified totes for extraction solvents, concentrates, and nutrient solutions. State regulations in Ohio and neighboring states often specify food-grade containers for any product that contacts consumable cannabis products. Grade A with full FDA documentation is the safest choice for regulatory compliance.
Construction & Concrete
Grade C or D recommended
Construction sites use totes for water storage, dust suppression, concrete admixture storage, and portable wash stations. Grade C provides reliable liquid containment at the lowest cost. Grade D totes are excellent for dry material storage, tool bins, and construction waste containment where liquid-tight integrity is not required.
Water Treatment
Grade B recommended
Water treatment facilities use totes for storing treatment chemicals including chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and coagulants. Chemical compatibility with previous contents is essential. Grade B offers the best balance of structural integrity and cost. Always use totes with new valves and gaskets to prevent chemical leakage.

Buying Used is a Green Decision
Every used IBC tote you purchase is one less container headed to a landfill and one less new container that needs to be manufactured. The environmental math is compelling: manufacturing a single new 275-gallon HDPE tote requires approximately 30 pounds of virgin plastic resin, 50 gallons of water, and enough energy to power a household for three days.
By purchasing reconditioned, you bypass that entire manufacturing footprint. The tote already exists. We simply inspect it, clean it, and put it back to work. The result is a container that performs identically to new at a fraction of the environmental and financial cost.
Many of our customers feature their use of reconditioned IBC totes in their own sustainability reports. We provide documentation including the number of totes purchased, estimated plastic diverted, and carbon emissions avoided to support your ESG goals.
