Safe for Food Contact

Food-grade IBC totes are specifically prepared for the storage and transport of edible liquids, food ingredients, and materials that come into direct contact with food products. Unlike standard used totes, food-grade containers go through a documented sanitization process that meets FDA requirements and supports compliance with HACCP, SQF, BRC, and other food safety management systems.

At Ohio IBC Totes, our food-grade designation is not just a label. It represents a specific set of procedures that every container must pass before it earns the food-grade classification. We source containers that previously held food-grade materials (juices, syrups, oils, food-grade chemicals), then put them through our documented triple-wash sanitization protocol followed by inspection, grading, and certification.

Our food-grade program includes full compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for HDPE food-contact materials, documented cleaning validation protocols, allergen management procedures, and complete lot traceability from the container's original manufacturer through our reconditioning process to your receiving dock. We provide all the documentation your food safety auditors expect.

The result is a container that is safe for direct food contact at a price that is 60-80% lower than buying a new food-grade IBC tote. For food and beverage processors, agricultural operations, and any business that handles edible products in bulk, our food-grade totes offer the perfect combination of safety, compliance, and value.

FDA Regulations & FSMA Compliance

Understanding the regulatory framework for food-contact containers helps you ensure compliance and prepare for audits. Here are the key FDA regulations and food safety standards that apply to food-grade IBC totes.

21 CFR 177.1520 - Olefin Polymers

This is the primary FDA regulation governing the use of HDPE in food-contact applications. It specifies the types of olefin polymers (including high-density polyethylene) that are approved for use in articles intended for contact with food. The regulation defines acceptable resin compositions, molecular weight ranges, density requirements, and extractives limits.

Key Requirements

  • HDPE resin must have a minimum density of 0.940 g/cm3
  • Extractives must not exceed specified limits when tested per FDA methods
  • Additives (antioxidants, UV stabilizers, colorants) must be listed in 21 CFR 178 as approved for food contact
  • The finished article must not impart color, odor, or taste to food under intended conditions of use

21 CFR 174-178 - Indirect Food Additives

This group of regulations covers all materials that may come into indirect contact with food, including adhesives, coatings, polymers, and adjuvants used in food-contact articles. For IBC totes, relevant sections include 174 (general provisions), 175 (adhesives and coatings), 177 (polymers), and 178 (adjuvants and production aids).

Key Requirements

  • All materials in the food-contact chain must be listed as approved in the applicable CFR section
  • Gaskets, seals, and valve components must also comply with food-contact material requirements
  • Printing inks and labels must not migrate through the container wall to contact food
  • Manufacturing conditions must ensure the finished article is suitable for its intended use

FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act)

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 shifted the regulatory focus from responding to foodborne illness to preventing it. Under FSMA, food companies are required to implement preventive controls, including controls for food-contact packaging and containers. Using a food-grade certified IBC tote with documented cleaning validation supports your FSMA preventive controls plan.

Key Requirements

  • Hazard analysis must identify container contamination as a potential hazard
  • Preventive controls must address container sanitation and previous-use verification
  • Supplier verification procedures must confirm food-grade certification of incoming containers
  • Records of container cleaning, sanitization, and previous contents must be maintained

HACCP Principles

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a systematic approach to food safety that identifies, evaluates, and controls hazards. Container contamination is a recognized hazard in HACCP plans. Our food-grade IBC totes come with documentation designed to support your HACCP plan requirements for incoming container verification.

Key Requirements

  • Incoming container inspection is typically a CCP (Critical Control Point) or prerequisite program
  • Verification records must document that containers meet food-grade specifications
  • Corrective actions must be defined for non-conforming containers
  • Our condition report serves as the supplier certificate of conformance for HACCP documentation

What Makes a Tote Food Grade?

FDA-Compliant HDPE

The inner bottle is made from high-density polyethylene that meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 requirements for food-contact materials. HDPE is chemically inert, does not leach harmful substances, and is approved for direct contact with edible liquids, oils, syrups, and other food products.

Triple Wash Process

Every food-grade tote undergoes our documented triple-wash sanitization protocol. Stage one is a high-pressure hot water rinse at 180°F to remove all residual product. Stage two is an alkaline detergent wash using FDA-approved food-grade cleaning agents. Stage three is a final sanitizing rinse with food-safe quaternary ammonium or peracetic acid sanitizer, followed by air drying.

Kosher & Halal Ready

Our food-grade IBC totes can be prepared with documentation to support kosher and halal certification requirements. We maintain records of previous contents and cleaning procedures that kosher and halal certifying agencies typically require. Contact us for specific certification documentation needs.

Full Traceability

Every food-grade tote comes with complete documentation including the previous contents category, the wash protocol used, the sanitization date, the technician identification, and the lot number. This traceability chain helps you maintain HACCP, SQF, and other food safety management system compliance.

Our Triple Wash Process

The cornerstone of our food-grade certification is a rigorous, three-stage washing and sanitization protocol. Each stage is documented with temperature readings, chemical concentrations, pressure settings, and technician verification.

1

Hot Water Pressure Rinse

High-pressure water at 180°F (82°C) removes all visible residual product from the interior walls, bottom, and valve area. The rinse water is collected and inspected to confirm complete removal of previous contents. This stage removes approximately 95% of residual material.

Temp: 180°F / 82°CDuration: 5-8 minutes per totePressure: 2,500-3,500 PSI
2

Alkaline Detergent Wash

FDA-approved food-grade alkaline detergent solution is circulated through the container at controlled temperature and concentration. This step breaks down organic residues, fats, proteins, and sugars that the initial rinse may not have fully removed. Detergent selection is matched to the previous contents category.

Temp: 140°F / 60°CDuration: 10-15 minutes per totePressure: Circulation / immersion
3

Sanitizing Rinse & Air Dry

A final rinse with food-safe sanitizer (quaternary ammonium compound at 200 ppm or peracetic acid at 60 ppm at FDA-approved concentrations) eliminates any remaining microbial contamination. Sanitizer concentration is verified with chemical test strips. The tote is then inverted and air-dried in a clean, dedicated drying area separated from receiving and cleaning areas.

Temp: AmbientDuration: 8-12 minutes plus air drying (30-60 minutes)Pressure: Low pressure application

Allergen Management

Allergen cross-contamination from reused containers is a serious food safety concern. Our allergen management program identifies, segregates, and documents allergen-contact totes to help you manage allergen risk in your operation.

Dairy / Milk

Totes that previously contained dairy products (whey, cream, lactose solutions) are identified and segregated. Triple wash with alkaline detergent at elevated temperature effectively removes milk proteins. Final rinse water tested for residual protein. Dairy totes are labeled and tracked separately.

Tree Nuts & Peanuts

Totes that contained nut oils, nut butters, or peanut products require enhanced cleaning protocols. We recommend dedicated totes for nut-containing products rather than cross-use. Nut-contact totes are permanently labeled and never released for non-nut food use without customer notification.

Soy

Soybean oil is one of the most common previous contents in our food-grade tote inventory. Alkaline detergent wash effectively removes soy oil residue. Soy-contact totes are documented in the condition report. Customers with soy-free requirements should specify this when ordering.

Wheat / Gluten

Totes that contained wheat-based products, malt extracts, or gluten-containing ingredients are identified and segregated. Customers requiring gluten-free containers should specify this requirement when ordering. We can provide totes with documented non-gluten previous contents.

Eggs

Totes that contained liquid egg products require protein-removal cleaning protocols. Alkaline wash at temperatures above 140°F is effective for egg protein removal. Egg-contact totes are documented and available for non-allergen-sensitive applications.

Cross-Contamination Prevention

Our food-grade reconditioning area is physically separated from general-purpose reconditioning. Cleaning equipment, hoses, and spray nozzles used for food-grade totes are dedicated and not shared with non-food containers. Technicians follow documented procedures for allergen management between different product categories.

Food Safe and Planet Friendly

Choosing a reconditioned food-grade IBC tote over a new one is one of the simplest ways a food processor can reduce their environmental footprint without compromising food safety. Our triple-wash process uses a fraction of the energy and resources required to manufacture a new container.

The numbers tell the story: each reconditioned food-grade tote saves approximately 30 pounds of virgin HDPE plastic, 70 pounds of steel, 110 pounds of CO2 emissions, and 25 gallons of water compared to manufacturing a new container. For a food processor using 100 totes per year, that adds up to 1.5 tons of plastic saved, 3.5 tons of steel saved, and 5.5 tons of CO2 emissions avoided annually. It is responsible sourcing at its most practical and impactful.
